A record-breaking quarter of a million young people start their DofE

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is celebrating substantial growth, with over 253,000 young people (up 6% from 2014/15) embarking on a DofE programme in 2015/16. This record-breaking figure takes the Charity one step closer to realising its Diamond Ambition of two million more individuals starting their DofE by 2020.

Among the 253,000 young people starting their DofE journey, more than ever before are from a disadvantaged background; 41,667.

Awards achieved also increased with almost 120,000 (up 7% from 2014/15) securing a Bronze, Silver or Gold DofE Award. With a swell of leading employers, from industrial giants such as British Gas to fashion houses such as Burberry, valuing the work-ready skills and attributes the DofE fosters, these new Award holders will reap the benefits of their achievement when applying for jobs and in the workplace.

This growth can be attributed to more organisations, such as schools, academies, colleges and youth clubs offering the DofE to young people; on average, a new DofE centre opens each week. The shift in schools taking on their own DofE licence (rather than operating under the umbrella of their local council) has influenced a staggering 42% increase (from 2014/15) in the number of organisations now licensed to run the DofE in the UK, to 1,800.

The DofE’s remarkable annual statistics are a fitting tribute to 60 years of what has become the world’s leading achievement award and symbolic of the DofE’s enduring positive impact on the lives of young people.
