Almost anyone with the desire to help young people develop can be a DofE Leader. We don’t expect you to be able to climb mountains or survive for days in the wild. In fact you don’t need any special skills or qualifications at all. If you do have a particular talent, we see that as a bonus.
The most important thing we look for is whether you really get a buzz out of helping young people improve themselves. Because, if you have that, your Operating Authority (OA) will provide the training and support you need.
Operating Authorities and the DofE have safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures that include vetting the suitability of Co-ordinators, Leaders and any other adult volunteers as part of the recruitment process. Your OA or DofE Co-ordinator will explain this and help you complete the relevant checks before you become involved.
