Aswad used to spend his time at home on the computer or just hanging about on street corners until the late hours. He was on the fringes of friendships and had never been involved with youth activities until he was introduced by a friend to his local DofE group.
Now a direct entrant Gold participant, his involvement in the DofE inspired him to gradually achieve many qualifications in leadership, first aid and health and fitness in just eight months. He is a credit to his family, the community and himself.
Aswad is currently completing his Basic Expedition Leader Award. He is aiming to become one of the few Asian Mountain Leaders in his region within the next few years as well as lead a DofE group. He has dedicated most of his free time to help out with younger groups on expedition and has recruited his sisters, brother and friends to complete their DofE programmes.
“I was doing nothing useful or anything that was benefiting the community but the DofE has helped me to work in the community as well as getting a job. Ever since my first taste of the outdoors I have become addicted. So far I have climbed Kentmere Pike in the Lake District and also furthered my development in fishing as well as kayaking and canoeing."
