Edward

Aged three years old, Edward was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis in his legs and joint hypermobility in his ankles, knees, fingers and wrists.  He was told he would never ride a bike or be able to swim.  Doctors considered breaking the joints and re-setting them but it didn't ever happen.  He found it more comfortable to wear his shoes on the wrong feet for a number of years in his early school life and he was seven and a half years old before he could ride a bike, but even then it was a struggle.

Incredibly though, Edward managed to achieve his Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards, finishing in 2010.  Edward was inspired by his grandfather who also achieved his Gold Award, over forty years ago.

During his DofE programme Edward experienced many challenges, such as walking long distances, camping in the cold and wet and finding the confidence to broadcast regularly on the radio.  He also learnt many new skills and achievements and gained his RYA Day Skipper and first aider qualifications and now teaches sailing techniques at a local club.

As well as learning new skills Edward was able to develop his existing ones in cycling and is now a very keen and competitive road and track cyclist and has completed the Paris to Hayling Island (Hampshire) cycle ride twice, raising over £1,000 for charity.

Edward feels the DofE has helped him to grow as a person in confidence, self-awareness and as a leader.  He is now studying Business Management at University and feels his DofE achievements significantly helped him to gain a place.

“It took me quite a long time to achieve all three Awards and I had to try very hard at times to maintain my commitment.  It has been an experience that I have enjoyed immensely that I will remember for the rest of my life.  I have made some great friends doing it too and would encourage all young people to give it a go.  With determination I achieved my Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award, despite all the odds, and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.”
