Participants raise £1,000 in sponsored climb

At the summit!

DofE participants from Richmond have raised more than £1,000 for charity after hiking up Snowdon last week.

Laura Morris, Laura Toolan, Sam Seagers, Gokulan Vamatheva, Jack Butler, Jasmine Bardzinski, William Henderson and Lucy Rogers, from five schools across the borough hiked up the 1,085m summit to raise money for Shelterbox.

They climbed the highest mountain in Wales and England for the charity, which aims to provide humanitarian aid to 500,000 people across the world every year.

Education, youth and children’s services cabinet member at Richmond Council, Councillor Christine Percival, said:  “I would like to offer my congratulations to these dedicated young people.  The weather on Snowdon earlier this week wasn’t great and they battled on through low clouds, winds up to 50mph and heavy showers throughout the day.

"Their perseverance and dedication has paid off however and they managed to raise over £1,000 for a very worthwhile charity."

The young people were raising money as part of the Volunteering section of their Bronze DofE programmes.  It was their third attempt at the climb after it was called of twice earlier this year due to the poor weather conditions.
