Youth Justice Contacts Directory 2010
Early in 2009 Christian Scott, Regional Director - South East, visited a secure establishment within the South East Region which very successfully runs DofE programmes for its young offender residents, despite them on average only being at the Centre for 13 weeks. It was felt that DofE provided an excellent framework within which to provide new activities and focus for these young people. It allowed them to formally recognise some existing skills they have and to encourage them to start some new ones.
Despite this great work, one of the difficulties that was posed by the DofE Leader was that he often found it difficult to ‘signpost’ young people to DofE activities within the area to where they were going once they left the secure estate. This plea rang true to some of the key findings from our own recent research (www.DofE.org/go/Aspire/) which identified the need to improve the ‘wiring-up’ of the secure estate and Youth Offending Teams alongside improvements in the sharing of knowledge and training of staff working with these particular groups of young people.
Through a regional Task Force we have created the Youth Justice Contacts 2010 guide with the aim of both providing relevant contacts within each of our local authority delivery partners and insight into how DofE is used with young offenders to great effect.
We hope that you will find the guide of interest as well as being useful for quickly finding details of those working nearby within the same field.
