A memorial to commemorate the life of a fallen soldier who motivated and inspired DofE participants has been unveiled

The team is made up of young people working towards their Gold DofE from across Edinburgh and from a variety of backgrounds.

Teacher Diane Butler who is quoted in the article said: "It teaches them to keep themselves safe in water and enables them to come to the assistance of somebody else. The DofE featured in The Times on July 30 2009, Alice Thomson has written a feature entitled 'Teach girls to be lawyers, doctors – and mothers.' The idea that women are not aiming high enough is outdated. In the article she is quoted as saying; "But I soon discovered that many of these teenagers already had ten starred As at GCSE, their gold Duke of Edinburgh's awards, had set up their own internet businesses, won medals for debating, were competing for Britain in sailing and had grade 8 distinction in oboe."

A 19-year old British backpacker survived almost two weeks lost in the Blue Mountains, eating seeds and grass and sheltering under a log for warmth. Jamie Neale had been taught bush survival techniques including how to light a fire and what to eat in the wild when he completed his Duke of Edinburgh's Award.
