Danielle had already started her Gold DofE when she became involved in drugs.  Arrested one night in a night club, she was charged with possession, tried and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

Devastated at her custodial sentence, she took a long hard look at her life.  Her family and DofE Leader were the only people who contacted her in prison.  Her new friends ignored her.  She decided to complete her Gold DofE.

This became an incredible story of perseverance, persistence and courage.  Danni was granted licence to leave prison weekly and speak to other teenagers about the dangers of drug abuse.  She still does this.  In prison she gained an NVQ in catering and in keep fit.  Released after a year, she strove to find her feet in the ‘real’ world and put her life back together.  Her DofE involvement helped her gain a college place to read psychology.  She also completed her Expedition section, the final requirement of her Gold DofE.

Twelve years on, Danni has a degree and a masters degree.  She now mentors young offenders and is a full-time youth worker, running the DofE in two youth clubs.  She is now part of the future of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

“I can honestly say that the DofE saved my life when I was imprisoned.  It’s turned my life around and I’m just so grateful that I am now able to influence young people to do something positive with their lives.”
