Sarah from Scotland wasn’t intending on doing her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). However, her DofE Leader managed to persuade her to start her journey.
As a single mum, Sarah had to arrange her DofE programme around childcare, and living on an island made it all that bit more difficult for her.
To complete her Gold DofE, Sarah had to complete four sections. Her skill was ‘cake icing’ and for her Volunteering section, she helped the elderly.
Sarah walked and cycled her expedition, on four different islands; Hoy, Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre. Her Residential section was Equestrian Agility. She had to make a complex journey to attend and it was the first time that she had travelled a distance like that on her own.
Now, after achieving her Gold DofE, Sarah takes on cake decorating commissions from her local community, and she also has a part-time job caring for the elderly she looked after whilst volunteering.
