8 Hour Outdoor First Aid

An 8 hour Emergency Outdoor First Aid Course suitable for those working in the outdoors where help is never too far away. Suitable for those needing an 8 hour course to validate National Governing Body qualifications.

Our 8 hour courses are available on the first day of our 16 hour First Aid courses. Therefore, to see our available dates please check the section below.

To confirm that you are only wishing to attend the first day for an 8 hour certificate, please include a note in the special comments box when applying. You will receive an email from one of our staff asking you to confirm this.

Those who attend the course for an 8 hour First Aid certificate will be charged £65.

16 Hour Outdoor First Aid

A 16 hour Outdoor First Aid Course suitable for any leader working in the outdoors and remote from help. Validates all National Governing Body Awards, and helps support leaders who might be up to 2 hours from help arriving after an incident.

Lowland Leader Training

– You must have logged a minimum of 20 walks in lowland countryside in different types of terrain (woodland, coastal, farmland etc)

– You must hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 16 hours and relevant to your work as a Lowland Leader

Hill and Moorland Training

Before you book onto a Hill and Moorland Leader training course, make sure you have done the following:

– You must be registered on the scheme and pay the registration fee (£47)

– You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland (you can join one when you register if you’re not already a member)
– You must have recorded a minimum of 20 Quality Hillwalking Days on appropriate terrain (ideally on DLOG) which can have taken place at any point (pre- or post-registration)

Expedition Skills Module – in conjunction with Wayahead Training Ltd

Courses subject to minimum numbers.

The Expedition Skills Module is an optional module available to walking leaders. It’s an opportunity to increase your skills where you will be trained and assessed to lead groups on multi day camping expeditions. The flexibility of the module makes it useful for Lowland Leaders, Hill and Moorland Leaders and Mountain Leaders in terrain and conditions within the scope of their respective leadership award. This is a residential course and involves an overnight camp.

Before you book onto an Expedition Skills Module course, you must meet the following requirements:

– You must check that you are registered for the module on the Candidate Management System (CMS)

– You must have passed a walking leader assessment (Lowland, Hill and Moorland or Mountain)

– You must have logged an absolute minimum of 10 overnight camps; ideally in a variety of contexts

– You must have assisted with at least two group camps (these can be included in your 10 personal camps)

– You must have a valid 16 hour first aid certificate, relevant to your work as a walking leader

DofE Expedition Skills Course (DES)

The DofE Expedition Skills (DES) is a basic expedition skills training course, normally attended by expedition leaders and expedition support staff. The DES gives delegates the theoretical and practical skills needed to support DofE expeditions (on foot and in normal Bronze terrain). This course involves a residential stay.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (British Canoeing)

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Foundation Safety and Rescue Training course is intended for all paddlers, coaches and volunteers, irrespective of craft or discipline choice, and is available in either bank-based or boat-based options. It provides training on key skills needed to operate safely and deal with common emergencies in a sheltered water environment. These skills then form the foundations for safety and rescue throughout British Canoeing Awarding Body awards.

Those joining this course must have a British Canoeing 2 star award, or equivalent skills. The course will be both theory and practical and will include a lot of getting wet.

Paddlesport Leader Award (British Canoeing)

The British Canoeing Awarding Body Paddlesport Leader award is targeted at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments. The training courses are available to support you in the development of the required skills; leadership, and the associated personal skills, safety and rescue skills. In order to achieve the qualification you need to show competence in the following elements:

– Participant focused leadership skills

– Personal paddling skills

– Rescue skills

– Underpinning background knowledge, understanding and experience.

Before you book onto a Paddlesports Leader Award Assessment course, you must meet the following requirements:

– You must register with British Canoeing (£39)

– You must have an 8 hour First Aid certificate.

– You must have an appropriate level of personal paddling skills.

Paddlesport Instructor Course (British Canoeing)

The British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Award is a two-day course containing both elements of training and assessment. It will support the instructor with practical skills, initial familiarisation activities, games to support learning etc. The process of completing the qualification aims to help prepare candidates for their first paddlesport instructing role; ‘primed and ready’.

The qualification is an entry level award and is designed to prime Instructors ready for their first instructing role.

Before you book onto a Paddlesports Leader Award Assessment course, you must meet the following requirements:

– You must have full On the Water Home Nation Association membership (registration costs up to £45)

– You must have completed the British Canoeing Foundation Safety and Rescue Training course

– You must have personal paddling and rescue competence
