Gold Award Forum
The London Gold Award Forum was established in 2005 and runs on an academic year. It is made up of a diverse mix of around 15 to 20 young people from across the capital who are currently undertaking their Gold Award or moving towards Gold level.
The young people on the forum assist in the planning and development of the DofE at a Regional level. They attend and speak at local and Regional OA meetings, working groups and at our Regional Conference, as well as acting as a sounding board on many developments within the charity.
Over the past year they have been working on creating a promotional video to investigate whether the DofE ‘Does exactly what it says on the tin’: to prepare young people for life and work. Other activities have included fundraising events, speaking at Buckingham Palace and St. James’s Palace, sending comments to the Government on Youth Policy, appearing on the BBC News, work experience at the London Region Office, visits to Head Office and planning for the 2012 London Olympics.
Participants’ commitment to GAF can be used towards their Volunteering section or can potentially fulfil their Skills section. Part of their involvement is planning and executing a Residential which they are expected to fundraise for. Over the past four years they have participated in a range of trips from rock-climbing in France, engaging in community work in The Gambia to developing social media in Malta.
Skills learned as part of the GAF encompass wider knowledge of the DofE and its operation, awareness of committee procedures, knowledge of research, time management, problem solving, communication, negotiation, teamwork and leadership skills. It is also a great way to meet new people from across London, as very few GAF members know anyone in the group when they come to meetings.
“I think it is great that the forum provides us with a platform, from which our voice can be heard. It is important that young people’s views are taken into consideration, after all, it is us who do the DofE!”
