Successful Riding Expedition on Dartmoor

Congratulations to Jade Coupland, Martha Allen, Livvy Parsons and Tash Soper who successfully completed their Bronze expedition on horseback on Dartmoor. The riders even managed to jump a few gorse bushes on the way despite being laden down with rucksacks and saddlebags!

In August five more riders successfully completed their Silver expedition. The three day venture was certainly challenging as they navigated in thick mist and driving rain, and endured gale force winds which almost collapsed their tents on the first night. Well done to Alice Kodritsch, Louise Harrison, Elsa Kent, Lilly Hunt and Molly Allen!

Employability and the DofE
Pendennis Shipyard, a super yacht custom build and refit shipyard in Falmouth, have over many years successfully used The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as a tool to enhance their apprenticeship programme.
New apprentice recruits are encouraged to enrol on their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. This of course reflects well on the employer, helps community cohesion and makes links with other local leaders and community members.
The great thing is as DofE Awards are recognised as such good tools to measure skills such as time management, team work, problem solving and commitment it broadens the learning of the young employees and in recent years has been offered to all apprentices in all departments such as fabricating, paint finishers, joinery, engineering, electrical etc. Currently Pendennis has over 50 young apprentices working towards the completion of their Gold DofE programmes, and a substantial number who have achieved theirs over the past 16 years.

Westlands School leads the way!
Westlands School have increased their team to help run the DofE, so there will be a total of five young Leaders. They will be helping the Bronze group which has grown in number over the last year due to their intervention.
All five Leaders have DofE Awards themselves and Molly (currently working towards her Gold Award) said: “I am proud to be a young Leader and I am looking forward to giving something back to the DofE, which has helped me to achieve so much.
Lucy Atkins the DofE Manager said: “I am so pleased to be working with such dedicated young people. Their enthusiasm and expertise is invaluable to me. The Bronze group will benefit hugely from working alongside such inspirational students.”
