This residential is the ideal place to start if you want to discover just how amazing the hills and mountains can be in Winter when snow and ice transforms everything. While we can’t guarantee blue skies every day we don’t need them to develop your skills or have a really memorable time. Over the six-day residential we’ll take you on mountain journeys to teach you the skills you need to be able to journey in snowy landscapes and have some unforgettable adventures. Be prepared for a lot of learning and a lot of laughs!
Through a range of adventures, we’ll cover the essentials of safe Winter mountain travel, including the use of crampons and ice axes, basic winter navigation, avalanche safety, constructing different types of emergency snow shelters and how to choose routes in the Winter hills. Our aim is to equip you with knowledge and skills as well as having a thoroughly great time in new environments. Depending on the weather and conditions each week, we’ll look to include some classic ridges, summits or mountaineering ground towards the end of the residential so that you can put your skills to use in the mountains and bring everything together. Don’t forget your camera…
Sample itinerary (subject to change depending on your group, the weather and prevailing conditions):
Day 1: Arrival and intros, get kitted up, get to know the area and get planning!;
Day 2: Winter skills day – start learning how to use your ice axe and crampons and get used to the snowy Winter environment;
Day 3: Winter walking journey – continue to develop your ice axe and crampon skills along with safe Winter travel, route choice, navigating in the snow and tactics for staying comfortable on a Winter mountain day;
Day 4: Winter scrambling/mountaineering – get up among snowy, rocky ridges and icy summits, building on your ice axe and crampon skills to tackle some more challenging ground;
Day 5: Snow shelter building – ever wondered how you build an emergency shelter out of snow or a snow hole that you can cook dinner in? Depending on the conditions, we’ll head out to dig, build, burrow and craft some different shelters. If conditions allow we’ll potentially cook dinner inside a snow hole, have a brew in an igloo or gather in a shovel up!;
Day 6: Skill development day / Winter scrambling itinerary – choose to further your skills in a particular area, summit a peak or get scrambling and mountaineering. This day will be left flexible so that we can make the most of the weather, conditions and activities that you enjoy most.
