Do you have an interest in history and archaeology and enjoy working outside? This unique Gold Residential experience will take place at The Ancient Technology Centre in Dorset alongside Dorset Council’s qualified and experienced Outdoor Education staff. The Centre is situated on the edge of Cranborne village within the Cranborne Chase AONB, and houses several reconstructed buildings from Stone Age to Viking periods.
Your accommodation will be in our fantastic Viking Longhouse – the only one of its kind in the UK. Please note that the accommodation is open plan, with communal sleeping in a hall. Participants should treat this as ‘indoor’ camping.
The main focus of the week is to learn traditional construction methods, using authentic tools and to complete a range of repair, maintenance and construction tasks on site. This will run each day, alongside other skills/activities.
Past examples of activity have included thatching buildings, constructing a roof and building a watercourse from the Roman water lifting machine to the vegetable allotment. Participants will also be given the chance to experience other “hands on” ancient skills which could include traditional forgework and fire making, authentic cookery, rope and cordage making, monolith moving and storytelling.
There will also be the opportunity for free time for participants after the main activities have finished for the day.
Places are limited so contact us to book early and avoid disappointment.
