About the residential:
Are you ready to make a difference? Then join us at Kirklees Summer Play Camp supporting over 450 children aged 9-12 to access a residential holiday camp experience this summer.
As a D of E participant, you will work alongside a small team of permanent volunteers to create a jam packed four day experience for children who are coming on the summer camp experience. You will join us for 5 days and as part of your first day, you will complete training and induction tasks so that you know the games that we play, our processes and routines, and of course key safeguarding and inclusion training so that you are able to feel confident supporting the wellbeing and care of the children who join us on this overnight camp.
Whether you have skills or experience working with children before or if this is your first time, we are certain that if you put in the effort, hard work and dedication over the 5 days, you will have an amazing time and make a real difference to the children who join us at summer camp. It is a fun and enjoyable experience, but you will be working long hours during the residential supporting with the activities, care, mealtimes and bedtimes of all 80 children who join us on each camp. This will mean getting up at 7.30 most mornings and getting into bed by 10pm most nights – however we pack a lot of fun and downtime into the days as well.
At camp there will be 20 DofE participants volunteering for the 5 days who will be supported by the Camp Leader (Fran) and Camp Leadership Team – including George who is our DofE Lead. Alongside this there are around 15 other experienced volunteers who support with each camp who, during the rest of the year, have careers in teaching, social work, the NHS, journalism, IT and a lot more. Many DofE participants choose to come back the next summer as permanent volunteers which shows just how much of a good time they had.
DofE participants are required to travel to site independently, but we can offer transport support from local train stations (Darton or Wakefield). Parking is available on site. All food and camping equipment is provided throughout the 5 days. We ask that participants have access to a mobile phone with WhatsApp for the duration of their residential.
Booking opens end of Feb 2023 and is expected to close around Easter with a waiting list in place following booking closure. There are 120 places available and we will operate a waiting list when camps are full. DBS checks will be carried out in Easter and full information and training information will be provided in the months in the lead up to the summer camp. Kirklees Summer Play Camp is committed to safeguarding all children and volunteers on site and so will conduct DBS checks on all volunteers and DofE participants in line with our Safeguarding and Safer Recruitment policy.
