Head to Pokhara, Nepal’s second city, and explore life living next to beautiful lakes and incredible mountains.
Volunteering as a teacher in Nepal is an important and highly respected role for any volunteer. Education is incredibly important and is the route out of poverty for many children in Nepal. Learning English is a key part of this and the ability for volunteers to bring their native English to the classroom is highly valued.
Resources in the classroom may be scarce so it is your energy, enthusiasm and creativity that is needed most. You do not need previous teaching experience and you will be supported throughout.
What will I do?
You’ll work with children aged between 8-12 in one of two schools. You’ll work with small groups of children or 1-1 with them, helping to improve their spoken and written English, maths and science.
You can expect to be at the school between 8.15 and 3pm Monday to Friday. At lunchtime and afterschool, you can get involved in running sport clubs, play board games and do arts and crafts – all fantastic chances to engage with children outside of the curriculum.
Whilst this project does not provide a formal TEFL qualification, you will receive some TEFL training and lesson planning support in Nepal.
Food and accommodation
Accommodation is provided throughout your stay. You will live with a host family along with atleast 5 other volunteers and the volunteer coordinator. The shared dorm rooms are single sex and have en-suite western style bathrooms. The house is comfortable, social and has plenty of communal areas.
You’ll be cooked two delicious meals per day by the host family and lunch, consisting of traditional snacks, is provided at the project site. Meals with the family often include rice, lentils and vegetables.
