August 27th – 31st 2018 at Thames Young Mariners
Our experienced British Canoeing coaches will be on hand to help you to achieve your greatest potential, step out of your comfort zone and learn new skills while you meet new friends en route to completing the Residential section of your Gold award.
There is a large selection of paddle sports craft and equipment for you to use including Play-boats, Sea kayaks, SUPs, Touring canoes and Slalom kayaks. Once you have built up your confidence paddling on our lake beside the Thames, there will be a few journeys on the river itself. At the end of the week, you should all have gained the British Canoeing One Star award. If you come to the course with a range of good confident paddling skills in both canoe and kayak, you will have the opportunity to be assessed for the British Canoeing Two Star.
The duration of the course is five days and fulfils the requirements of the residential section of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. During the week participants will keep a digital photo diary of their activities, leading to a presentation and display at the end of the course.
An important part of the course is that it provides the opportunity to meet new people in an unfamiliar environment. You will be living and working with others, building new relationships and working as part of a team. It is for this reason that the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recommend that ‘only a small minority of those taking part should be known to the participant’. (ie participants should only know one other person on the same course).
You will stay in tents on our picturesque site beside the River Thames and all food will be provided. Meals are provided in the main hall, a short walk from the tents.
£310 is inclusive of all activities, accommodation and meals. Minibus pick up and return to local train stations available, please contact us for more information before booking your train ticket.
