Tall Ships Youth Trust – Solent DofE Residential

Voyage Highlights:

Complete the residential section of your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award while having fun and making friends onboard a world-famous Challenger yacht.

Set sail with Tall Ships Youth Trust, learn to sail and work towards your RYA Start Yachting qualification.

You’ll learn:

-Sea terms and parts of a boat, rigging and sails
-Personal safety equipment
-Sail handling
-Ropework
-Man overboard procedures
-Emergency equipment
-Manners and customs
-Rules of the ‘road’ (sea)

You’ll sail the Solent and you may also experience sailing along the Jurassic Coast to Poole, Weymouth and Portland. The route will be planned by the Skipper at the beginning of the week and reviewed each day to take account of the weather conditions and other factors.

On the first day you’ll meet our TSYT sailing staff and spend time getting to know your fellow crew members. You’ll then get to grips with learning basic sailing techniques.

Over the following days you’ll build your sailing knowledge and experience. We’ll also aim to include sailing at night, if possible.

You’ll be fully involved with all aspects of sailing the yacht from looking after the boat to cooking and cleaning. After a day at sea, most evenings will be spent covering theory, playing games, relaxing and socialising, or you may have the chance to go ashore.
