Explore the South Coast, learn to sail and work towards your RYA Competent Crew qualification and achieve your DofE Gold Residential on this 5 night voyage.
You will learn the fundamental aspects of sailing whilst working towards your RYA Competent Crew qualification. This is a great introduction to cruising and will teach you about personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship to the level required to be a useful member of the crew of a cruising yacht.
The syllabus includes:
Sea terms and parts of a boat, her rigging and sails
Fire precautions and fighting
Personal safety equipment
Manners and customs
Rules of the road
You may have the opportunity to sail along the Jurassic Coast to Poole, Weymouth and Portland or across the Solent to Cowes or Yarmouth. This route will be planned at the beginning of the week and reviewed each day depending on the weather conditions and time available.
The first day will include meet and greet followed by a safety briefing before setting the sails and heading out into the Solent. You will then begin to learn basic sailing techniques and experience man overboard practice. The evening will be spent alongside where you will have the traditional Tall Ships’ fajitas dinner.
Throughout the week, you will be involved in all aspects of sailing the yacht from looking after the boat to cooking and cleaning. After a day at sea most evenings will be spent covering theory, relaxing and socialising or you may have the chance to go ashore.
There is a possibility you could be recommended to the Trust by the Skipper to come back and volunteer as a Watch Assistant or Watch Leader for future Tall Ships voyages.
