The DofE Drive app, called Optio, has a number of features to use from the day you start driving:

What is DofE Drive?

DofE Drive is a new car insurance service from the DofE which provides DofE participants with a discounted insurance quote because they are doing or have done their DofE. It is important to note we cannot guarantee this is the lowest price you could get with another insurer – but get a quote and compare it. 

How can the DofE get discounted car insurance for past and current participants? 

We recorded over one million miles of DofE participant driving data and compared it to driving data from comparable young people. The results showed that DofE participants are 42% lower risk. 

This means insurers want to talk to youWe have developed a partnership with three insurance companies, who are offering DofE participants a discounted car insurance quote as statistically, they are safer drivers. 

You can only get the discounted car insurance through our links – you won’t find this on a comparison website or search engine. 

Does the DofE receive any money for DofE Drive? 

Yes. We have a deal with the insurance broker, Autosaint, who pay the DofE for every policy sold using the dedicated link on our website and emails. 

Autosaint and the insurance underwriters split the money they have to reduce the original policy price between the policy purchaser and the DofE. The majority of the discount is being used to reduce the original price of the policy.

Who are the insurance companies for DofE Drive? 

We are using Autosaint as the insurance broker for DofE Drive. They have created a unique landing page for DofE Drive quotes to allow DofE data to be included. 

The three insurance underwriters for DofE Drive are Ageas, LV, and Covea. 

Do I need a Black Box installed? 

Autosaint doesn’t require a black box to be fitted, but they do require a simple dashboard smartplug which can be installed by you with simple instructions. 

How much is the discount? 

We are not offering a specific percentage off the original quote price, as there are too many factors and variables involved in providing you with an insurance quote. What we can say is that if you are a Silver or Gold participant / Award Holder the savings will be better than for Bronze participants. 

When you get a quote through Autosaintif you use the DofE Drive link, you will receive one quote which is the best quote provided from the three insurance underwriters – Ageas, LV and Covea. 

Should I check around for the best price? 

Yes. We believe we will be able to offer either the best price or a highly competitive price, but we cannot guarantee this. So please get a quote and compare it. 

Do I have to be a current participant? 

No. As long as you have done your DofE, even if you did not complete your Award level, you can get a quote – but you must use the DofE Drive link to get a quote.

How do I get a quote from DofE Drive?

Why do I need the DofE Drive App? 

The DofE Drive App, called Optio, can be downloaded for both iPhone and Android phone users. It is free and provides a range of useful information like My Carbon foot, My Garage, My Dashcam, and My Driving analysis. 

If you are registered on the App, it will also record driving data and could be used in the future to reduce renewal costs.

My trips aren’t being recorded – what might be wrong?

Please check you have GPS enabled on your phone. You can normally find this option in the Settings menu of your phone. If you are unsure how to do this please refer to your phone user guide.

If your GPS is enabled please check your phone has a GPS lock and knows your location. GPS cannot work if your phone is in a pocket or bag during the journey. GPS performance can be improved by keeping the phone in a cradle when you are in the vehicle.

If you have no 3G or WiFi signal the app is not able to send its data back to update your driving record. When you are back in a 3G area or have a WiFi connection your driving record will be updated.

If you were stationary for more than 5 minutes during a journey recording will stop and won’t start again until you are travelling faster than 5 mph. If you are in a severe traffic jam your journey data may be shorter than you expect as the application records that you have stopped your journey part way and fails to restart as you crawl through the jam.

How much of my data allowance is the app using?

This app will use an average of 2 Megabytes of your data allowance per day.

Since installing the app my phone battery life has decreased. What’s wrong?

The app relies on a constant GPS signal to work so we recommend that if your phone battery is draining too quickly you keep it plugged into a car charger wherever possible or charge before the journey.
