The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award announces Ruth Marvel as new CEO

Ruth joins the charity in November with a wealth of youth sector experience, following her successful tenure at Girlguiding where she’s been Deputy CEO since 2016 and Acting CEO during 2018.

Before Girlguiding, Ruth was Director of Strategy and Innovation at the disability charity Scope, where she led on organisational strategy, innovation and co-designing services with disabled people and their families. Her early career was spent in advocacy, research and public policy roles.

Announcing Ruth’s appointment, Lord Kirkham, Chair of Trustees for the DofE said:

“Ruth is a great fit for the DofE – she’s passionate about developing all the possibilities for young people, brings a breadth of senior experience from within the youth sector and has the energy, enthusiasm and vision to build on our charity’s strong foundations, helping us maximise future opportunities.”

Reflecting on her new role, Ruth said:

“I am delighted to be joining The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as CEO. The DofE has a proud history of giving young people incredible opportunities to develop their skills, showcase their talents, test their resilience and give back to their communities. I am looking forward to working with staff, volunteers and partners to support many more young people to make a positive difference to themselves and their communities through their DofE.”

Ruth replaces Peter Westgarth, who retired as CEO of the DofE in June, following 14 years at the helm.
