Sue James

My first experience of camping in a lightweight tent and not under canvas. We used to shout, "mint sauce", at all the sheep we passed in the fields and hillsides. They were never interested and carried on munching on the grass.

As I started when girls did one less day of walking, I completed the boys' standard of expeditions for my Bronze and Silver but the girls for my Gold, including youth hostelling! My Scout Explorer Belt the following year felt far more worthy of a Gold Expedition, 10 days in a very wet Norway.

I completed "Making the most of yourself" for my Bronze, no physical for girls in those days. I know how to cross my legs at my ankles not my knees but never followed that training. As a club swimmer and later a water polo player I was into physical activity from a young age so completed the physical section for Silver and Gold. I did wear makeup on my wedding day 30 years ago.

I did childcare as a skill and kept my book, it was totally out of date when I gave birth to my first child aged 31.

I remember that the Duke of Edinburgh spoke to me at my Gold Presentation at Buckingham Palace, probably as I was in Ranger Guide Uniform.

My eldest two children are Gold Award Holders, my daughter's presentation in Buckingham Palace Gardens is already delayed by a year.

My youngest with a chronic condition is slowly working through his Gold and certificate for each section during this pandemic will give him something to add to the GCSE's he achieved four years ago on a CV in the future.
