We want to make sure every traveller or outdoors enthusiast enjoys their adventure, whatever happens.  Lifesystems aim is to provide products that prevent issues and protect the user wherever they may go and will always perform when needed.


What do you do?

Lifesystems came into being when the owner of the business was travelling in Fiji and got injured on some coral.  Luckily, for him, his partner had a Tesco carrier bag of medical equipment and just happened to be a doctor.  On returning to the UK, Mark saw this gap in the market and decided to start designing and selling sterile first aid kits.  Today, Lifesystems still make first aid kits in the UK and is synonymous with the red first aid bag.  Now, Lifesystems has a wide range of products focussing on travel medical and mountain survival.  Lifesystems make most of their products in the UK and its team of product developers are true travel experts, supplying expedition gear to specialist retailers in more than 40 countries worldwide.

Why do you work with the DofE?

The DofE as an organisation encourages young people to achieve something they often didn’t know they could do.   Whether that be teaching another student maths as a volunteer or climbing Pen Y Fan in the rain, that sense of achievement is something that cannot be bettered.  By helping fund the DofE, we are part of that and it gives us great pride.

We are also very lucky to provide products to use in the outdoors and if we can help more people, through the DofE, love the outdoors then everybody wins.

Further, having the DofE recommendation on our products also gives that stamp of approval that is invaluable.

What do you think the DofE gives to young people?

One word really, confidence.  Confidence to try something new, confidence in their team, confidence when presenting, working, helping, volunteering with or to other people.


For many brands sustainability is a key topic and it certainly is for Lifesystems.  Making some of our products more sustainable is a challenge due to the chemical nature of some of them.  Others have been more straight forward; removing plastic, reducing packaging, ensuring all our insect repellent bottles are easily recyclable etc.  However, we will always be proud that the majority of our products are made in the UK and that makes a significant difference (no shipping, more efficient factories etc.) to our carbon footprint.  The best way to create sustainable products, which is often overlooked, is to ensure they last.  We design our products to last for years and years.  Not great for sales, but perfect for reducing the impact on the environment.  Many of our original first aid kits are still being used (albeit with new components) and we are proud of this.  So, we still have work to do, but we are on a good path.
