Oyster Worldwide – Wildlife Conservation volunteering in Borneo

Help to protect and regenerate wildlife habitats and rainforest in beautiful Borneo. You will spend your days monitoring local wildlife, from orangutans to pygmy elephants, as well as replanting and conserving their jungle home. Volunteers get a real opportunity to live in a small piece of paradise – and help to keep it that way.

When?

You can take part in this programme for 12 days with arrivals on the 21st of each month.

What’s it all about?

Preserving and regenerating the jungle is a large aspect of this project. More jungle means more animal habitat. You’ll be observing and monitoring animals from a boat on the river, looking at orangutans, primates, elephants, birds and many more amazing animals. You’ll be with the local community too, helping teach the importance of sustainable stewardship and also learning about their customs like making traditional fishing nets.

Accommodation and food
Your accommodation is in the small village of Orang Sungai in a riverside guesthouse, where you share a basic yet comfortable room with at least one other volunteer. There is a shared western style en suite too.

Food is delicious, and provided by the local community. You will eat lunch and dinner in family homes, enjoying their home customs and delicious fresh food. Dishes include rice, noodles, meat, vegetables, stir fries and fish.

Free time

Participants have a busy schedule each day, however there are occasions for seeing the local area, absorbing the culture and seeing more animals. Included in your stay is a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre. You may also have the chance to learn local crafts, see traditional dance and do a nature walk.

How much does it cost?

12 days costs £1549

Project requirements

Volunteers must be 18+ to participate. The summer is very popular, so you are encouraged to book early to guarantee your space.
