Oyster Worldwide – Volunteer as a Sports Coach in South Africa

Coach your favourite sport to children living in some of the poorest communities in South Africa. You don’t need to be the worlds’ best sportsperson, your enthusiasm and ability to act as a positive role model is what we are looking for.

What’s it all about?
Sports education does not form part of the national curriculum in South African schools which means that not all children have access to sport at school. This project helps to bring sport to poorer areas of the country and you can help by bringing your skills.

As a volunteer you and your group will head to 3 schools per day, 5 days a week, to coach your chosen sport (or sports!). This project is not just about coaching the kids but also acting as a good role model. You can expect to be coaching children who are aged between 10-13 and who are often new to playing sport in a structured environment.

Which sports can I coach?
You can choose to specialise in one sport, or combine several for more variety. This project is very flexible and the ability to switch between sports makes the weeks even more diverse.

Our volunteers typically coach:
• Football
• Rugby
• Cricket
• Netball
• Hockey
• Tennis
• Swimming
• Basketball

What else can I do?
If sport isn’t your thing, or you want to complement your sports coaching, you can also spend time volunteering at one of the schools as a teaching assistant supporting maths, geography and English lessons. The kids love the interactive approach to learning, and the fun that volunteers bring with it.
There is also the opportunity to volunteer in a nursery and day care centre where you’ll spend your time playing games, reading to children and making a fool of yourself, providing much-needed friendship and attention.

Accommodation and food
You will be living in a volunteer house with other participants. There are generally 10-20 volunteers on each programme living together. There is access to a games room, gym and outdoor swimming pool. Three meals are provided each day.

Free Time
You will have free time at the weekend, although there are lots of activities included in the price that you pay. Examples include a surfing and sand boarding day, a safari trip and a township tour.

When?
You can volunteer from between 5 – 12 weeks at staggered points throughout the year. Our summer programmes starting in July and August are particularly popular with students.

How much does it cost?
5 weeks costs £995 with each extra week costing £175 per week. Up to 12 weeks

Project requirements
Volunteers must be 17+ to participate. As the summer is very popular, you are encouraged to book early to guarantee your space.
