How Cara’s Apprenticeship was shaped by her DofE
This National Careers Week, we speak to DofE Youth Ambassador, Cara, about her Finance Degree apprenticeship at Bloomberg while studying towards a BSc in Finance and Investment at the London Institute of Banking & Finance. She discusses how doing her DofE and being a Youth Ambassador was pivotal in transitioning to the world of work.
How did doing your DofE help you in your apprenticeship?
Throughout the course of completing my DofE, and as a Youth Ambassador I have had the ability to develop and grow many key skills which have undoubtedly been transferable to the world of work and my apprenticeship. As a Youth Ambassador I’ve had the privilege to represent, and voice the opinion of young people at the Conservative Party Conference. Having this opportunity at 17 provided me with a greater sense of confidence and belief in my own ability to talk to individuals and effectively communicate my own thoughts and opinions. Throughout my apprenticeship at Bloomberg I have had the opportunity to present ideas and network with professionals. DofE has helped immensely.
What skills have you gained through your DofE that has helped you prepare for the world of work?
From being completely lost on an Expedition and having to work as a team, to volunteering and being part of a team; DofE has taught me how to work effectively and collaboratively. At Bloomberg, teamwork and communication are fundamental when working with your colleagues. I have learned and developed so much since joining and the foundation built through DofE has been instrumental in shaping my ability to successfully work in such a collaborative environment.
I’ve also had the privilege to be volunteer under Bloomberg’s BOB (Best of Business) scheme, recently I helped to make Christmas care packages for the homeless. Since being part of DofE I have learnt the importance and value of volunteering, and I am proud to be part of an organisation where I can continue to do this.
Juggling my different DofE sections while keeping up with school work required a level of organisational and time management skills. The ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines and manage both university assignments and responsibilities as a Degree Apprentice are vital and DofE has undoubtedly helped me with this.
What are the benefits of doing an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship can offer numerous benefits, including the opportunity to learn and immediately apply this knowledge in a practical setting. This hands-on experience not only reinforces learning, but has also sped up my understanding of certain financial concepts, which has made them easier to understand and apply.
The ability to build a strong, professional network has been invaluable. Being able to work alongside experienced finance professionals and industry experts has helped give me valuable insights and connections as I begin my career journey. I have also had the chance to talk to senior leaders and professionals from different teams and departments and gain mentorship which has hugely helped me to expand my knowledge further beyond just my own role.
The ability to gain real-world work experience and develop key skills in a professional setting has been paramount to my own personal development. From gaining greater proficiency in technical skills to the development of soft skills, from day one you are constantly learning and growing as an individual. There is also the benefit of earning while learning. Being able to earn a degree with no student debt along with earning a salary definitely has some benefits!
