‘Pride Month is more than a celebration’
Every June, we celebrate Pride Month to honour the LGBTQ+ community, and recognise its history and achievements.
Many take part in parades, events and campaigns to promote visibility, acceptance and rights for LGBTQ+ people. It’s both a celebration of love and a reminder of the work we still need to do.
We hear from our DofE Youth Ambassador Christopher about the importance of Pride, how his DofE has connected him to the LGBTQ+ community and advice for allies.
1. Why are you passionate about the LGBTQ+ community?
I’m passionate about the LGBTQ+ community because not only am I a part of the community but I also believe in equality, dignity, and the right for everyone to live as their authentic selves without fear. I want to be part of building a world where they are accepted, valued, and celebrated not just for who they love or how they identify, but for who they are as people.
2. Why is it important that everyone celebrates Pride Month?
Pride Month is more than a celebration. It’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. When everyone celebrates Pride, it sends a message that LGBTQ+ people are not alone, and that their rights, history, and voices matter. It’s an opportunity to learn, to uplift, and to show support, even if you’re not part of the community yourself. Everyone taking part helps break down barriers and encourages a more open-minded, empathetic society. It’s about standing up for human rights and fostering compassion and inclusion.
3. Which activist inspires you and why?
Marsha P. Johnson was a Black transgender woman who played a pivotal role in the Stonewall uprising of 1969, which sparked the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement while also being an outspoken advocate fighting for LGBTQ+ rights, particularly for those who are often forgotten members of society: the marginalised and vulnerable despite the struggles that were faced.
4. How has doing DofE benefitted you?
The DofE programme is built on inclusion and self-discovery and, as an Ambassador, it has given me the space to grow in confidence and connect with people from all walks of life. Through shared challenges and achievements, I’ve met individuals from the LGBTQ+ community and felt inspired by their strength and authenticity. DofE promotes a culture of respect and teamwork, where everyone is valued for who they are: that’s a powerful message of inclusion in itself.
5. Do you have any advice for someone wanting to be a better ally to LGBTQ+ people?
Listen and lead with kindness. Being an ally isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being open to learning and standing up when it counts. Educate yourself on the issues, challenge stereotypes, and don’t be afraid to call out discrimination, even in small moments. Use your voice to support others and create safer spaces where people can be themselves. And most importantly, remember that genuine allyship comes from empathy and action!
