Super Section Activity
Dylan is currently completing his Bronze Award with Surf Life Saving GB and was considering volunteering activities that would impact the local community. He decided that it would be really useful to update the Braunton Sports Directory which was last produced in 2015. Now that most clubs and facilities were back open post covid-19, Dylan thought this was a perfect opportunity to update the booklet so that families and local children in the area could find out what was on offer and get back into a normal routine.
Over the 12 weeks of his programme, Dylan prepared all his resources and practiced his telephone manner before contacting all the previous clubs to find out whether the information was correct or if it needed updating. Also finding out about new clubs along the way!
Once he had all the information that he needed, he set off producing the booklet, Dylan even had to learn to use some different IT applications to create it!
After the booklet was finished, Dylan was also able to secure some generous funding from different organisations so that it could be colour printed and then delivered to over 1800 children in the local schools and other local amenities. SLSGB DofE manager Jo said ‘“Dylan is striving for his Bronze Award. The commitment and endeavour he has shown in producing a community directory as his volunteering section has been above and beyond what has been required by the scheme. He has worked extremely hard and his efforts have made a great difference to support the local community.”
Not only has Dylan used his time to create this useful resource for the local community, he has also been developing personal skills, Dylan said “Throughout my last weeks I have received praise for my phone call voice and communication skills. Children of my generation have been known to have poor communication and talking skills, so it has been good to progress on these skills throughout my last couple of weeks. I have gained confidence and skills throughout. It has been a good experience and one I hope will benefit me in the future.”
DofE Ops Officer Louise said “Dylan has done an amazing job with his volunteering activity, it’s heartening to see a young person producing a resource that will help so many families in the local area. Good luck with the rest of your Award Dylan – Well done”’
