Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust – NHS Care Home Befriender Volunteering – Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot

This volunteering role involves spending time with care home residents, offering companionship, conversation and support with activities to help reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing.

This volunteering role takes place in a number of local care homes, where you will spend time with residents to provide companionship, conversation and social support. You will check in with a member of staff on arrival and be guided on who you will be supporting that day.

Your main activity will be sitting with residents, chatting and getting to know them, helping them feel heard, valued and connected. You may support simple social activities such as reading, playing games, or encouraging participation in group sessions. You could also help residents stay in touch with family and friends, including supporting them to use phones or tablets where appropriate.

At times, you may accompany residents during mealtimes to offer friendly company and gentle encouragement. You will always work under staff supervision and will not be responsible for personal care.

Through this role, you will help reduce feelings of loneliness and improve residents’ wellbeing, while gaining confidence, communication skills and valuable experience in a supportive care environment.
