McLaren Racing supports Do It 4 Youth in partnership with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards

This summer, McLaren Racing is partnering with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) for a new fundraising challenge ‘Do It 4 Youth’. The key themes behind the challenge are core values shared by both McLaren and the DofE: resilience, teamwork and mental wellbeing. The vital funds raised through the campaign will enable more young people across the UK, regardless of their background, to be able to take part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Young people have been among the hardest hit by the covid-19 pandemic, with millions locked out of employment, education and training. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has a 65-year history of supporting young people and helping them find belief in themselves to reach their full potential. The Do It 4 Youth challenge kick-starts a five-year plan by the charity to get a million more young people from the hardest-hit communities to take part in the DofE award scheme to help build resilience, confidence and to feel strong, powerful and limitless.

McLaren Racing is joining forces with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to encourage people of all ages and abilities to team up with friends, family and colleagues this summer to complete four fun-packed DofE inspired challenges in four weeks, with the money raised supporting young people where it’s needed the most.

DO IT 4 YOUTH: four challenges. four weeks, all for youth

The four exciting DofE inspired challenges are:

GET UP: choose a physical activity such as cycling, walking, running or climbing
SKILL UP: learn a new skill
FREE UP: give up something like junk food, sugar, meat or social media,
HAND UP: where you can lend a hand and volunteer in your local community

To help raise much-needed funds for young people, McLaren Racing is donating two VIP passes to the 2022 British Grand Prix with McLaren, including behind-the-scenes access to the team and full hospitality, a tour of the paddock and McLaren garage, and a meet-and-greet with the McLaren Formula 1 drivers. To take part, text dofe to 84903 (UK networks only).

Text to win lines are open from 00.01 on Monday 28 June 2021 and will close at 23:59 Saturday 31 July 2021. Each text will incur a £10 donation to the DofE.

The McLaren MCL35M driven by Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo will also carry The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award logo during the British Grand Prix weekend, 16-18 July 2021.

McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris, from Somerset, UK, was recently joined at McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, by a group of local young people who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The young people had the opportunity to meet Lando, discuss their own DofE Award experiences, and have a tour of the facility, before taking part in a pit-stop challenge, inspiring teamwork and resilience to help them ‘skill up’ – one of the key challenges of the Do It 4 Youth campaign.

Lando Norris, McLaren Formula 1 driver, said: “At McLaren, we share many of the same values as the DofE, with teamwork, commitment, resilience and self-belief being important to our success as a team, so it’s great to be working together. It was great to meet the young people who are taking part in their Award and hear about their experiences. I’m excited to get involved in this new challenge, Do It 4 Youth, and encourage others to take part. The past year has been difficult for so many young people, so this is a great way to get active, challenge yourself and raise important funds to help more young people discover their strengths and support physical and mental wellbeing.”

Zak Brown CEO, McLaren Racing, said: “We are delighted to be working with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to help raise awareness and funds for the incredible work they do with young people, work that has never been more vital. Young people across the UK are struggling to cope post-lockdown, and the DofE Award is a powerful way for any young person to build belief in themselves. We want to help raise £1 million pounds for young people from the toughest backgrounds to gain the confidence, skills and experience they need to overcome whatever life throws their way. We’d love our fans to get involved in their own ‘Do It 4 Youth’ challenge this summer and raise money to help make a real difference to the lives of young people by giving them new opportunities to fulfil their potential through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.”

Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Trustee of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK said:
“We’re really pleased that McLaren Racing is supporting the Do It 4 Youth campaign for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award this summer. The partnership is another great example of the power of the Women in Business Committee, who work on behalf of the Award to raise awareness and fundraise for the charity. As an elite sports team, resilience, teamwork and self-belief are at the core of what McLaren does to perform at the highest level. To have Lando meet some of our young people that are taking part in the Award was incredibly inspiring for them and, through this challenge, with the support of McLaren Racing and its fans, we hope to inspire others to get involved and raise funds to enable many more young people to take part.”

Doyin Sonibare, a Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award holder and ‘Do It 4 Youth’ Team Captain visited McLaren Technology Centre to meet Lando Norris and said: “I’ve been involved in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award since I was 15 years old. My mum encouraged me to go and it has changed my life. Now I want to give others the chance to take part. With the Do It 4 Youth challenge, there are so many ways to take part and we want to get as many people involved in a summer of activities as we can to support young people.”

The Do It 4 Youth challenge is open to anyone with any ability, and is a chance for those who have never taken part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to get a taste of what it might be like. You can get involved alone or as a team, and can start at any time from 10 June, but must complete it within four weeks and by 30 September 2021.
