No Young Person Left Behind: Ellesha’s story
As someone who enjoys being outdoors and doing physical activities, the DofE was the perfect opportunity for Ellesha to develop her confidence and skills, while doing something she loves. Ellesha was able to do her DofE thanks to funding.
Through DofE, Ellesha got the chance to explore a variety of activities – she volunteered with Cubs and Beavers and learned construction skills – she now has her sights set on a career in painting and decorating.
“DofE is an important place for me because it’s somewhere that I can come and be myself.”
“DofE is really inclusive and everyone gets the same opportunity. Even if you can’t afford it, at my youth centre, you only need to pay for food and stuff for the Expeditions, and as it’s a smaller group, it also means that everyone’s needs can be met.”
Starting her DofE programme was a big step for Ellesha. As someone who didn’t like trying new things, she knew it would push her outside her comfort zone. However, DofE has taught her the importance of working with other people, staying motivated and not being afraid of failing. Having already progressed from Bronze to Silver; Ellesha has her sights set on Gold.
“I wanted to sign up because I haven’t done anything like this before, and I wanted to try something new.”
Michelle, Ellesha’s mum says: “Ellesha used to get into quite a bit of trouble, but coming to DofE, she’s changed dramatically. She’s very caring and compassionate and has changed so much as a person.”
Barry, Ellesha’s DofE Leader says: “Ellesha shows us how DofE is perfect for her, she thrives in this environment. She’s found something she enjoys and she’s been brilliant with the rest of the group, she’s really supportive of everyone else. She’s gone from strength to strength through her DofE.”
Ellesha has found her somewhere she can thrive and be herself. But without financial support, stories like Ellesha’s may not exist. Right now, 4.5 million young people in the UK live in poverty and that means missed chances, lost confidence, and futures shaped by hardship.
We want to reach 250,000 more young people by 2026 and remove financial hardship as a barrier to a life-changing DofE programme. And it starts right now, with the next group of young people already waiting for the chance to begin their DofE journey today.
