This Gold Canoe programme provides each team of six with dedicated support from their own instructor/supervisor. The journey begins with an online team meeting, where participants meet their instructor/supervisor, discuss expectations and review the 20 Conditions. An outline plan for the practice expedition will be agreed during this session.
Teams then take responsibility for planning their practice expedition, including campsite choices, their team goal and a full menu plan. These are submitted to their instructor via their AAP email address, monitored by our safeguarding lead. Additional online support is available through supervised Zoom sessions, with safeguarding measures in place for under 18s.
A full canoe skills day follows, covering paddling techniques, safety and rescue, the BCAB Paddle Safer syllabus and progress towards the BCAB Discover and Explore Awards.
For the practice expedition, instructors issue kit, check readiness, and develop moving water skills and decision making. Afterward, teams receive milestones to guide their qualifying expedition preparation, with optional instructor check ins.
During the qualifying expedition, teams are supported by their instructor but assessed independently. The programme concludes with an online presentation where participants share their team goal and celebrate their Gold achievement with family and friends.
