Oyster Worldwide – Volunteering with elephants in South Africa

Volunteer in an elephant park close to the sea in South Africa. Work with rescued elephants that are unable to be reintroduced to the wild due to their past traumas. These elephants roam freely around the park, and volunteers help to care for and monitor the well being of the ellies.

What’s it all about?

You will be volunteering Monday – Friday at the park, with your weekends free. It is a busy weekday schedule, with activities such as:

– cleaning out the elephant sleeping areas
– creating enrichments for the elephants
– monitoring the elephants as they roam
– collecting data on elephant sleeping patterns
– harvesting food from the elephant garden

Tasks take place from about 7am – 6pm each day, with time for breaks in between.

When?

You can volunteer throughout the year for durations of 1 week or 3 weeks+.

Accommodation and food

You will be living in a volunteer house in the grounds of the elephant park. The house has a self-catering kitchen, patio, communal areas and several bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. You would be sharing a room with at least one other person.

Food is not included in the price, however you can cook for yourself or eat out very cheaply in local restaurants.

Who is this suitable for?

This project is especially suited to those aged 18+ with a passion for elephants, conservation and travel. It is particularly beneficial for those who are keen to work in zoology, biology, research or animal management.
