5 tips for saving money on your expedition equipment
Picking the right equipment that keeps you safe while not costing the earth can be tricky. Especially when you’re presented with a long kit list!
But don’t worry. You probably have most of the personal equipment you need already, especially clothes.
Our DofE Expedition kit list is a guide, and the recommended brands are just that – recommended. What’s important is that you pack what you need for a safe journey.
We’ve pulled together a few tips to help you get ready for your expedition while saving money.
1. Look in your wardrobe
It seems obvious but start by looking at what you already own. Do you have comfy trousers that aren’t jeans or cotton? Can you find a short-sleeved and a long-sleeved top? Do you have a waterproof jacket? You don’t need expensive clothes as long as they keep you dry and warm.
2. Borrow second-hand
Places like Vinted, Facebook Marketplace and eBay are excellent to look for second-hand expedition gear, including hiking boots and rucksacks. Make sure you test any equipment before the expedition and always ask for pictures or to try something on if you can before buying.
3. Borrow from friends and family
If you know someone who did their DofE recently, maybe you can borrow their kit? They might also have some tips on how to avoid blisters and what to pack too!
4. Repair broken kit
If you already have or are borrowing kit that needs a new zip or has a hole, it’s better to repair than replace. Some manufacturers, like our expedition kit partner Vango, offer a spares and repairs service on a range of kit.
5. Invest in quality items
If you have to buy something new, invest in a quality item. It might be more expensive right now, but it’ll save you money in the long run as you won’t have to replace it as often. Plus, you might even be able to save 10% (and often more!) by using your DofE card at one of our five Recommended Retailers of Expedition Kit – GO Outdoors, Blacks, Millets, Ultimate Outdoors and Tiso.
