Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust – NHS Hospital Mealtime Companion Volunteering – Torquay, Newton Abbot, Brixham, Totnes

This hospital volunteering role involves supporting patients at mealtimes by offering encouragement, conversation, and practical help with eating and drinking.

This volunteering opportunity takes place on hospital wards, where you will support patients during breakfast, lunch or evening meals. You will begin by checking in with staff and helping to prepare the bedside area for mealtimes. You will then be guided to patients who may need extra support, such as encouragement to eat, help cutting up food or assistance with feeding.

A key part of the role is providing friendly companionship including sitting with patients, chatting and creating a calm, positive mealtime environment. You will also offer drinks and help ensure patients are comfortable and able to access their meals. All activity is carried out under staff supervision, with full training provided to ensure safe and appropriate support.

Through this role, you will help improve patients’ nutrition, hydration, and overall wellbeing, while gaining confidence, communication skills and valuable experience in a healthcare setting.
