The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award exists to inspire hundreds of thousands of young people, from all walks of life, to explore who they are, grow in confidence and develop the skills they need to successfully navigate life. We help young people to build lifelong belief in themselves, supporting them to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, and discover talents they never knew they had.

Our vision

To reach our strategic goal of making DofE more accessible and relevant to all young people we recognise the importance of ensuring that our adult volunteers, staff and trustees are diverse in characteristic, thought and experience.

We want DofE to be an organisation where everyone is welcome, feels included, and where we value the diverse experiences and skills that our staff, participants and adult volunteers bring. This means that individuals feel respected, included, able to give of their best and well-equipped to role model inclusivity.

We are committed to doing the work needed to facilitate this change over the years to come, putting in place the infrastructure and support to allow all adult volunteers, staff and trustees to continuously grow and improve, ensuring we are equipped to best serve the most diverse group of young people ever.

What we’re doing

  1. Supporting our partners and volunteers to be inclusive of all people, ensuring the award is accessible and appealing to more young people than ever before
  2. Creating space and opportunities for staff to shape the charity to become inclusive for all through the creation of Staff Networks, diversity monitoring and staff experience monitoring
  3. Delivering tailored training and development activities to staff across the charity
  4. Implementing key learnings regarding our brand and how we are perceived externally to ensure we reach all young people
  5. Working to gain greater understanding of barriers to participation and taking action to overcome these
  6. Reviewing policies and procedures, including the training and development of employees, partners and volunteers, to prioritise activities that work to dismantle practices and behaviours that create barriers.

We ask our partners and volunteers to commit to engaging with training and development relating to equity, diversity and inclusion and fulfilling our licensing requirements to ensure any potential discrimination is eliminated.

One has long, straight dark hair and wears a white top, while the other has long braided hair, wears a light-colored sweater, and carries a purple handbag. They appear to be engaged in conversation, standing against a textured wall with warm lighting. A blurred background shows other attendees and a large printed image of a tunnel.
