DofE is achievable by any young person who chooses to take up its challenge, regardless of ability, gender, background or location.

All our programmes are driven by the following ten guiding principles which are at the heart of everything we do.

  1. Non-competitive
  2. Balanced
  3. Achievable by all
  4. Progressive
  5. Voluntary
  6. Achievement focused
  7. Personal development
  8. Demand commitment
  9. Personalised
  10. Enjoyable

By following these ten guiding principles, we aim to give any young person the opportunity to do their DofE programme, regardless of their personal circumstances.

The personal and non-competitive nature of a DofE programme means that participants from different and diverse starting points can equally be proud of achieving a certificate based on their personal challenge and journey.

Additional needs resources

DofE programmes can be challenging but also extremely rewarding to a young person with additional needs. With the right support and resources, the DofE Award enables young people to embrace new experiences, overcome challenges, and gain skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Expeditions

To support additional needs expeditions, Leaders should start with The Expedition Guide

The guide is designed to be the focal point of DofE policy and support for Leaders delivering expeditions, including delivering to young people with additional needs. The expedition requirements are covered in detail in the guide and there is also advice and information on a range of areas including modes of travel, expedition environments, and accommodation, providing options for various flexibilities.

Leader Recorded

The DofE has developed functionality to allow specific Leaders (or other adults in the participant’s hierarchy) to act in eDofE on behalf of participants who are unable to engage fully in the system because they have additional needs or are prevented from using technology for cultural or religious reasons.

Detailed information is set out in the eDofE Leader Recorded user guide. If you think your participants would benefit from using Leader Recorded, please speak to your Operations Officer.

Funding for Additional Needs and Alternative Provision

From time to time, DofE offers funding for settings that deliver to young people with additional needs and/or are in alternative provision. The current funds available are:

Additional Needs Impact Report

We knew anecdotally that the DofE has a positive impact on young people with additional needs but we wanted to have a better understanding of their experiences, so we commissioned Chrysalis Research to review our existing evidence and conduct surveys and interviews and produce an impact report.
