The Expedition Guide

The Expedition Guide is the essential handbook for delivering the DofE Expedition section.

The guide sets out everything you need for a safe, rewarding and high‑quality experience. From core principles and requirements to planning, training, supervision and assessment, it helps Leaders to support young people prepare confidently for their expedition.

The guide also includes practical advice for Leaders on:

  • environments
  • accommodation
  • equipment
  • food
  • safety
  • inclusive practice.

Make sure you’re using the latest version by deleting any previous versions you may have saved.

We’re also working on a Welsh version of the guide, and we’ll let you know when this is available.

Recent changes

In 2024, we developed our first digital Expedition Guide. Since then, we’ve worked to make sure the DofE programme stays relevant, accessible and safe to secure a consistent high-quality experience for all DofE participants across the UK.

This means there’s been some updates which we need to add into our Expedition Guide. These are the key changes we’ve made in the latest edition.
