By running the Young Leaders programme, you help put young people at the heart of your DofE centre. Working alongside them, you’ll help them develop leadership and personal skills.
Young Leaders work with their adult DofE Leader to choose which activities to support. This is your opportunity to think about what you need support with in your centre. It’s up to you and the Young Leader what they do, and they do not need to do the same activity the whole time they’re in the programme.
Taking part in the programme is free for you and the Young Leader.
Additional needs
If you identify a young person who needs additional support with access, please email [email protected] and we can make sure that every young person has an equal opportunity to take part in the programme. Young people can be supported by a parent, carer or another representative during the online session, if needed.
Resources
You’ll find all our Young Leaders resources in the Resource Centre. This includes the tools you need to nominate and recruit young people and info on what Young Leaders can do.

Impact of the Young Leader programme
When we surveyed adult leaders in September 2025, they said the top impacts of the programme are:
- Increased role satisfaction
- Removed routine admin tasks
- Freed time for complex issues
- Reduced need to chase participants
Leaders highlighted that the programme has “taken the stress off staff and teachers”, “helped participants gain confidence” and “raised DofE sign-ups massively”.
