Welcome to the Young Leaders programme! This checklist takes you through the programme from start to finish. The tasks do not have to be done in order, you can do what works best for the Young Leader and your centre.
1. Log in to eDofE
The Young Leader needs to log in to their new eDofE account with the information from the email we’ve sent them. The Young Leader should have registered for the programme using their own email address, not a Leader’s email or a generic email like [email protected]. If the young person does not have their own email address, please email [email protected] to discuss options.
When the Young Leader has logged into eDofE, they need to update personal details like their address and phone number. The following day, their learning platform account will be set up.
2. Start the training
The Young Leader needs to log in to HowNow and set up their account. Then they need to:
- Watch the orientation video under My Learning.
- Work through the Young Leader introduction.
- Book an Action planning session.
The Action planning session is a live online session with other Young Leaders and DofE staff. After this session, the Young Leader gets their badge.
3. Agree activities
The Young Leader and their DofE Leader meet to agree what activities they will do as part of their role. What activities the Young Leader does will depend on their interests and the needs of their centre and Leader.
Other things you’ll discuss are:
- What module(s) the Young Leader will do to support their activities and action plan.
- The protocols for volunteering in your centre, and what policies and procedures you have.
- Any additional training your centre requires or can offer.
- Dates for volunteering and the adult Leader’s expectations of commitment.
- Whether the Young Leader will use the programme for the Volunteering section of their Award.
- How you will stay in touch with each other.
- How the Young Leader will report any problems to their Leader.
The centre is responsible for their Young Leader, and they represent the centre they support. When Young Leaders volunteer for their centres, they come under the centre’s policies and insurances.
When Young Leaders access training with DofE, we operate under the DofE Safeguarding Policy.
4. Do the training
Every Young Leader must do the Inclusion module. They must also do at least one optional module. Find more information about each of the modules on the Young Leaders page.
As the Young Leaders finish their modules, adult Leaders can follow their progress on the training screen in eDofE.
5. Volunteer in the centre
The Young Leaders volunteer for at least six months and up to one year. They do not have to do the same activity for the whole programme.
Throughout the programme, Young Leaders and adult Leaders should have regular check-ins.
6. Attend an Exit session
After six months on the programme, the Young Leader can book their Exit session. They get their certificate after completing this session.
There is no formal continuation of the role after this, but the Young Leader can stay involved as a volunteer if they like. If they’re over 18, they can progress into an adult Leader role in the centre.
