Expedition is about developing initiative and a spirit of adventure and discovery. You’ll do this by planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey as part of a team.

For your Expedition, you need to:

  • Agree on a team goal
  • Plan your journey
  • Do at least one practice expedition for Silver and Gold
  • Complete your qualifying expedition
  • Be self-reliant throughout the journey
  • Do a final presentation

The length of the Expedition depends on what Award level you’re working on. Take a look at timescales to check how long the section needs to be.

Your route should be one continuous journey. You have to get through the journey using only your own physical efforts, but it does not have to be on foot.

Your mode of travel could be:

  • Foot
  • Bicycle
  • Boat
  • Canoe
  • Kayak
  • Wheelchair
  • Horseback

Reasonable adjustments

DofE expeditions are designed to be flexible and inclusive, with a range of adjustments available to support participants with additional needs.

These adjustments can include:

  • Alternative expedition models like
    • Project-focused routes
    • Expeditions in restricted spaces
  • Attending with a carer
  • Walking with day bags instead of full rucksacks
  • Flexible accommodation like
    • Staying indoors
    • Returning home to sleep

If you think you may need any adjustments, please speak to your DofE Leader as soon as you enrol so they can help plan an expedition experience that works for you.
