“I Wanted a New Challenge”: Grace, embraces adventure and growth through her Bronze DofE

Grace, 17, completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in 2024-2025. Grace, a student at Kemnay Academy, took on the Bronze Award to challenge herself and gain valuable life skills: “I knew DofE would give me life skills I couldn’t get anywhere else”.

For her Volunteering section, she supported younger members, through coaching and leadership with Girlguiding UK.

Grace discovered a love for volunteering through DofE and has continued her involvement with Girlguiding UK beyond her Award: “DofE has changed me – I found that I really enjoy volunteering, it’s a great experience with lots of benefits”.

Her Physical section involved walking around her local area in Kemnay, gradually increasing the distance of her walks. For her Skill, she chose cooking, setting herself the goal of trying new recipes and expanding her baking abilities.

Her expedition took place along the scenic Moray Coast, where she and her group faced the challenge of getting lost a few times. Through teamwork and communication, they navigated their way back on track – an experience that taught Grace resilience and perseverance.

Grace says the expedition was her favourite part of the Award, as it allowed her to explore new places and learn in a hands-on way.

“I enjoyed the expedition the most—it was a great way to explore and learn. We got lost a few times, but we overcame it by communicating and working as a team,” she says.
